The Drive to Venice

 Dear Gentle Readers

Today we said goodbye to our gracious host, Fabrizzio and punched Venice into Google Maps. We noticed that it passed through Lucca, which Fabrizzio had told us about. So when we got to Lucca, we found the old city and drove through the wall. My goodness, the wall is about 30 metres thick. It has never been breached.

However we could not find parking to go into the old city, so we reluctantly turned our way towards Venice. Google Maps said it would take 4 hours and since Victoria has been ill with a cold, it wasn't a good idea to hang around Lucca.

Italians don't go around mountains, they punch through them. We went through so many tunnels, one which was several kilometres long. One mountain near Fabrizzio's place is a quarry for the exquisite white marble and you could see it clearly from the motorway. The steps to our Parliament House are made from marble from here.

Three hours later the GPS guided us to a harbour then said "Take the ferry to Lido". It's then we discovered that the hotel Victoria booked for us is on the island of Lido, across the water from Venice. We paid €122 for two passages on the ferry for our car, there and back and 48 hour passes for travel around Lido and Venice.

So I drove the car onto the ferry and it took us to Lido, a trip of around 25 minutes.  You can see it in the picture on the right, the black one at front right. There were boats every where, from tiny one man speedboats to large cruise boats and everything in between. Tomorrow we'll catch the bus to the Lido S.M.E and take a vaporetto in to Venice proper.

  1. it would have been a bit claustrophobic for me all those tunnels. But how they made all those years ago quite a feat
