Port Isaac (Portwenn)

 Dear Gentle Readers

Today we visited Port Isaac on the west coast of Cornwall. This is the harbour. If it seems a little familiar, it is the setting for the fictional town of Portwenn from the TV series, Doc Martin. Here you can see the familiar beach and the breakwaters in the background. This series was a favourite of Victoria and myself.




As we walked down the steep streets towards the harbour, we passed this house with this sign out front. For those who don't know, Morwenna was Doc Martin's secretary at his surgery.







This is Fern House where Doc Martin lived and had his surgery. You can see a large crowd out front. Fern House is the most photographed thing in Port Isaac.

This is Mrs Tishell's pharmacy. She had a huge crush on Doc Martin.









This is the main street of Port Isaac, Fore Street. Louisa's house was on this street but we could not locate it.







This is the school where Louisa taught.










This is the street that Doc Martin would stride down when making house calls. It is very steep but Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) managed it with ease.








We found this little passage that actually goes through a house in a little side street.









This was Aunt Ruth's house. A tourist guide who went past said there were 34 houses in this street and his is the only one occupied. The rest are holiday homes. Very sad and a lot of towns are dying because the permanent population is shrinking.





This is the Lion Pub which was the Crab and Lobster pub run by Bert Large and his long-suffering son, Al.

Our Itinerary for the upcoming World Trip

 Hi All Victoria and I leave on May 27th for Rome via Kuala Lumpa and Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately Etihad Airlines has changed our flights and we have a 37 hour layover in KL, so we'll spend two days there touring KL before arriving in Rome on May 29th. We'll spend 17 days in Italy and Switzerland before flying from Zurich to London on 16th June. After spending 4 weeks in the UK on a road trip around England and Wales we fly from London to Washington D.C. on the 16th July. We'll spend 6 weeks on a road trip across the U.S. until we reach California to visit Ros's sons, Joshua and Luke. We'll fly home to Australia on 27th August and spend the weekend in Sydney visiting my half-brother Ben and his wife Michelle as well as their son Damien and his wife Vanessa before flying home to Perth on 31st August. Victoria's friend Giselle will be looking after our house and cat while we are gone.

Rome and the Vatican

 Dear Gentle Readers I must apologise for my tardiness in writing this blog. We left KL, got into Rome at around 6.30am, caught a taxi to our lodgings, immediately organised a taxi to take us to the Vatican for the tour at 11am. The tour took around 3 hours, so we were tired from lack of sleep on the plane and footsore from traipsing around the Vatican. When we finally got back to our lodgings, we were so tired we crashed. The next day we were up early to catch the train to Naples to collect our car and see Pompeii. We headed off to Pompeii  only to find it is extremely popular this time of the year and the traffic was horrific. I took a wrong turn and lost 20 minutes getting back so we missed out on our organised tour. Fortunately we managed to procure another one, but Pompeii is huge and the tour was over two hours on very uneven stone paths. Heaven knows how the ancient Romans managed to walk on them. Kuala Lumpur

 Dear Gentle Readers After a tiring flight we arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 8am today. Didn't take off till 2.15am and didn't sleep well on the plane. The supposedly lie-flat seats did not lie completely flat although significantly better than "cattle class". Another passenger commented that it was the worst Business Class he had flown - we couldn't compare because this is the first time for us. This leg was flown by Malaysian Airlines on an Airbus A330-200 so we were not impressed considering how much the seats cost. It didn't help that we encountered quite a bit of turbulence during the flight including one particularly violent episode that woke us both up. However the food was delicious, although being fed at 3am was an unusual experience. The staff and service were top-notch so no complaints there.
